8/8 Workout (I TOTALLY called it!) August 8, 2007

There are few emotional highs that are better for me than calling the shot, and then making it (my kids and my wife are higher on the pecking order, just to be clear). But, today, when we picked up our kettlebells, I had a mixture of “YES, I KNEW IT!!!”, and “We’re working today…”. I guess you can’t win them all.

Except when you set a new personal best in time to 100 swings w/20 kg ‘ball!

Warmup:

Workout:

Two other points: My time for 100 kettlebell swings completely shattered my last time by ~ 35 seconds! I love it when that happens, though I don’t think it will be by quite the same amount next time! Secondarily, what in the heck is a Turkish Get-up? Simple: Lay on the floor, holding a bar in one hand straight up (arm is perpendicular to the floor, bar is parallel to the floor), then stand up, keeping the bar parallel to the floor, at the top, switch hands, and then lay back down. Repeat.

Turkish get ups are very hard. I did these a couple of months ago with http://www.ryanlee.com/ at a Perform Better Workshop. We also worked with the kettlebells. I was sore for about 5 days. No kidding!

I’m concerned about all this excitement over swinging balls. I think there’s something here I don’t understand. References to Turkish anything in the same post regarding swinging balls makes me extra skeptical.

I want to see you do the “Windshield Wiper”. ;-)

re: riddenwords

It’s comments like these that make me wonder how in the heck the human race continues forward. Why would a woman want to have fun with you, let alone bear your children? I mean, if you don’t understand the excitement of swinging balls by now, you might want to join the priesthood, or become a triathalete or something. ;-)

But seriously, I was in the skeptical camp as well until I did a workout with them. And then, I said, “Ah, this is HARD!!!”. And the next day, all my muscles were sore. And the day after that, the workout was extra fun! Basically, the deal is that these swings work out a lot of muscles that other, more commonly used methods don’t. It’s all about functional fitness.

re: Windshield Wiper
Yeah, that looks like fun, doesn’t it? We have not yet performed this movement in class. I think it’s largely because the gym we’re in is so limited wrt pull-up bars - there’s only one. But, it could also be because we haven’t quite gotten all the necessary muscles toned up for it yet. OTOH, we have done upside down situps, and some things w/rings that were fun.
