…and back down again August 19, 2007

One thing about this trip made me think a bit more about BMR. The question is this: What’s the difference in one’s BMR if they are living outside v. living inside a house? Additionally, if you work in an air-conditioned office, how does this affect BMR? Personally, I notice a big difference in hunger and food eaten when I’m camping in a tent than when I’m at home.

You make a good point there, I’d be curious to know if BMR is effected or not. Have you found out at all?
I have not researched this.
My suspicion is that such material is somewhere within our U.S. Military documentation. It just seems like something that has been done to determine caloric needs to figure out how big an MRE needs to be, and recommendations as to how many one should eat per day in a given environment, with average daily temperatures plotted every 5 degrees….
However, I do know that on days when I spend a lot of time in the out of doors, and sleeping in a tent, I definitely eat more than usual. And, I also weigh much less at the end of the trip than when I hit the trail head. So, more calories have been consumed.
So, for me, yes, I know I consume more when out in the wilds. Beyond that, not known. I guess if I was really into this, I’d do a study, ala Brad, where I plot everything I eat via weight and see where it all ends up.
