What can you learn at a family reunion? (part 1) July 7, 2008

You think family reunions are going to be boring and dull, but it turns out they often offer great career advice. For the next several posts, I offer some great pearls of wisdom that came from some of my family members!

The first story was regarding quiting and severance packages.

It seems that the company in question was bought-out, and one of the employees of my relative was going through the slow, downward spiral. Finally, said employee came in to my relatives office and quit. And then asked for a severance package. My relative said, "You quit, you don't get severance, this is your decision, not mine."

The advice is simple. If you're one of those so fortunate as to likely have a severance package should you get laid off or fired, don't quit when you're simply unhappy. You're not likely to see a severance package if you quit.

But, if you're that unhappy, it might be a good thing to start looking for a new job (both in and outside of your current employer). Duh.
