And how does this apply to hiring developers? September 9, 2008
Posted by hardly Strategic ConcernsJust got done reading Lance's great article, Why I'm not an Idealist in Politics or HR, over at YourHRGuy.com.
It's a great read from the political perspective, but pay close attention to the HR perspective. Especially those of you leaders & execs who give short shrift to the HR function. I'm here to tell you he writes from very solid experience, and its valuable to think closely about.
Here's the thing: This analogy can be applied to most of the major fields in any business, including that of Software Development. For example:
- The CEO with the unwritten rule that they won't hire anybody over the age of 30 because he wants people who are committed to work, e.g. willing to work ridiculous hours to ship the product.
- The VP of Sales who constantly undermines the chosen software development process so they can get their pet feature slid into the product.
- Lip service given to continued professional development like going to classes or seminars with the quip that, "Oh books are a much better value".
- A Dev Leader that says they build high-quality code, but refuses to hire anyone who looks like a tester or test lead.
Who are you hiring today, an idealist or a realist? Why?
