Faking Yourself Out October 13, 2008

I think I can.
I know I can’t.
Today, I had one of those moments, masked in the fog of a night spent getting up and down to fight the monsters in my youngest’s dark bedroom.
We were doing a 3-rep max load of front squats and I had miscalculated the weight. I had under-counted by 40 lbs, so when I went to try what I thought was 185#, but which was really 215# and it felt too heavy, I was sorely confused. Until my coach pointed out that maybe I should try backing the weight down to 200ish. Ohhh, yeah, let’s try that…

Should I be looking for a job right now? October 13, 2008
Posted by hardly Career DevelopmentLet's say that you're relatively happy in your current role, but not ecstatic. This career step has been good, but it's been about 18 months or so, and you're starting to get a little itchy.
Should you start looking for a job? In this economy?
Yes, and no.
You may not be needing to actively look for a job, but you should be setting yourself up to be recognized by others as a candidate of choice, and to be ready for that conversation that starts with, "We're looking for...".
Being a job candidate has changed markedly in the last 5 years or so (and we're all job candidates all the time, so this means you, Mr. Smartypants!). The big change has been with respect to the broad adoption by many to social networking sites, or social networking sites that are work-focused. With these, everyone is a candidate all the time.
You should get your profiles looking all spiffy and attractive. You know, to a recruiter or a hiring manager, not so your weak-ass social life improves.
And, you should get your mental mind-set oriented towards acceptance of having 'the conversation', and in identifying the key attributes that would be attractive to you for your next role.
Oh, and make sure that your profiles indicate that you are open to 'career opportunities'.
Then, make sure you have a discussion w/your boss & your HR Manager about your career desires. Who knows, that next new role may happen in your current company. Stranger things have happened!
But, actively looking? You're probably not mentally there yet. But remember, success means being ready when the opportunity comes along. Get ready.
