How would you fix healthcare? August 12, 2009

One thing I abhore are folks who repeat, repeat, repeat slogans without thoughtful analysis of what they state. And so it goes with Healthcare and the folks getting in front of their elected representatives during the August recess. One thing I notice is that few are actually stating how they would fix the system that is not currently working, but they sure as heck want you to know that their little area of concern is the most important piece of the puzzle.

With all this in mind, I just got done reading a thoughtful piece by Mark Anderson regarding the current hearthcare debate. The part that got my attention was his comparison between the Healthcare Insurers and the banking industry.

You know, the banking industry that got us into this recession? Oh, THAT banking industry!

What I want to know is this: When the H1N1 virus returns to the U.S. this fall, and folks start getting sick and some die, will they blame the healthcare insurers for our inability to help us fight this virus? Remember, Insurance at it's core is about risk mitigation. How have these firms helped mitigate the risk from this virus? They haven't because it's Doctors that do this work.

So why do we pay health insurance companies to increase our risk?
