Mr. Cringely has a thought-provoking post about one of the biggest sacred cows in business - maximizing shareholder value.

For someone like me, who has spent his share of time pouring over Accounting, Ops, and Economic texts, this article does tend to lock up the brakes. If not maximizing shareholder value, then what should be we focused on? And, how does one properly value the investments made by all participants in a company?

Oh, and do you know the answer to his question, "Where did this cult of shareholder value maximization come from?" I'm going with Jack Welch. Anyone else you want to throw under that bus?
